I recently finished reading The Crystal City by Orson Scott Card.  This was book six in the Tales of Alvin Maker series.  I thoroughly enjoy this world that OSC has built.  It is based on early America, but has several twists that change the landscape of that world and time.  Probably the major thing is that everyone has some type of magic, called knacks, which allow them to do something special.  Also, the Native Americans were able to keep the settlers back and have contained them east of the Mississippi river.
